How you got inspired to create this scape? Why did you choose this name?
When I was young, I spent a lot of time outdoors, mostly because my grandmother was from Malaysia and her sister had a durian farm. I remember spending days running around in the plantation and playing in dirty water catching fishes. Now, I’m a conservationist and work outdoors a lot..so my whole life, I’m more or less outdoors and in the forest/mountains. The forest calms me and inspires me and deserves a lot of respect. I made this scape to remind me of where I like to be…Home, and that is why I called it going home. You can take it literally as I’m going home from the forest.. or you can take it that when I go to the forest, I am home. For me, it was the latter.
I wanted to convey how wonderful the forest is and how majestic the trees were. The real thing never fails to take my heart away. This scape like i said previously.. reminds me of where i like to be and why i work to save it.

(troncos, piedras, plantas…)
In which order you choose the elements of this aquarium? (wood drift, stones, plants…)
I started out looking for wood that would look like tree trunks. Surprisingly, such nice straight wood is hard to come by here in Singapore. When I started thinking of this scape it was more than 2 years back, and back then, straight wood was not popular here..so it took a long time to find the ones I liked. After the wood selection was done, I chose the plants. I was inspired by a type of plant I saw long ago when I still was in Japan (I was there for 2 years) so I picked the one closest to it I could find in Singapore. Sadly, it didn’t grow like the ones I saw there, even though the shapes were similar. I still don’t know what they used in that tank I saw so long ago in Japan.

Which techniques you used for to make the distribution and fixation of every kind of solids?
Perspectiva.
Perspective. When you look at photographs, it is a 2D image that is a representation of a 3D image. When you scape fish tanks.. you are essentially doing the opposite, changing a 3D image into a 2D. This is because when you submit your tank for competitions, its only in a photograph form. So it is important that we understand how perspective works in the photograph that you are going to take and submit and how to scape a tank to reflect that perception of depth in a 2D image. I used varying wood sizes and a consideration of smaller plants at different regions to try to replicate that. Also I tried to make my path meandering to give a sense of wonderment..but however, on second thought, I am still not satisfied with how it turned out. I think there are several elements that could have been improved but that’s why we scape… to learn from what we do. The more we scape.. the better we understand how to convey the image we have in our heads.
I used some pebbles to give the wood a more sturdy base as they needed to stand vertically, then with the soil around them, they were more steady in the water. The pebbles also helped in shallow areas where there was not so much soil to support the wood.

Have you prepared any kind of draft or drawing previous to set-up?
No, I didn’t. I don’t like to be too fixed in how I scape something. I just scape and look at the results…if I don’t like it, I’ll change things. If I like it.. I’ll still change things to find something better. .. if I can’t find anything better, I go back to the one I liked most. This can take up to days or weeks.

¿Para hacer la distribución de los sólidos y las plantas has seguido algún tipo de proporción estudiada previamente o simplemente has improvisado sobre la marcha i/o seguido tu intuición.?
To arrange the distribution of solids and plants, are you following any kind of previously studied proportion or simply you improvised as you work on the scape or followed your intuition?
I think I am more of an intuition scaper… of course, like I said before, I will also consider points that I have learnt from previous scapes and things I notice in nature into consideration. For example, when you look at a photograph, trees/plants in the back look very small. So I ask myself, how do I create this effect of perspective? Are there plants with similar leaf shapes but of different sizes that I can use to do this? How/where is the horizon in a picture? How do I replicate such a horizon in my fish tank? I like to play around with that theory in my scapes. I also usually, take a lot of time to play with what I have and consider different orientations of the same object and how it would work in the scape before I get down to the actual scaping.

How you arranged the first planting?
I usually plant with the aquarium filled to about half. It helps maintain the stems of the longer plants out from covering the unplanted areas.

(co2, nitrato, fosfato, potasio, micros…)
How do you add nutrients in the first weeks of set-up? (co2, N, P, K, microelements…)
I start out with about ¾ Nutirents, then after the first week. I will go with the full dosage from then on.

(kh,gh, no3-k-po4)
With wich parameters of water do you like to work? (kh, gh, no3-k-po4,...)
For a tank like this with metal halides, I like to keep my No3 levels high…somewhere around 30-35ppm. My K isa round 20ppm and Po4 is around 1.5ppm. Co2 i put in ALOT! :D

How and how much light you put on the aquarium? What colour light do you use?
If you can believe it.. this tank runs on 48watts of light most of the time except for 4.5hrs everyday it also uses a 150watt MH. I’ve set my light cycle at 10hrs. This 10hrs is broken into 2.5 hrs of 48watt T5 Lights, 4.5Hrs of 150watt MH + 48watt T5 and lastly, 3hrs of cool down with 48 watts T5 lights again.

What kind of water have you used and which criteria you use for water-changes?
In Singapore, we are lucky that we can use water straight out from the tap so that is what I do. However, I also don’t like to change everything too drastically so most of the time during water changes, I will only change 50% of the water and top up the rest with tap water. I also usually dose my fertilizers straight after a water change.

¿Has tenido aparición de algas en algún momento? A qué lo atribuyes? De que manera las has combatido?
Did you get any algae in any moment? Why you think it happened? How did you eliminate it?
Of course I have algae. I have yet to see a tank without algae! Haha..:D
But the algae is only very little and not a problem at all. If I keep to my weekly water changes, I only have to wipe the inside glass with a cloth during my water change and thats it!

How you do the pruning (you arrange all aquarium at a time? Just partial pruning?)
I prune according to the way i understand how a plant grows. If i know a plant grows fast, i will prune it later. If i have a slow plant, then i would have to prune it sooner because it would take time to grow to how i like it. So you can say i do partial pruning.

In any moment in the initial steps you moved the solids as you were not convinced with the result?
I change 2 of the wood positions and size because i felt that it would enhance the perspective better and I did add rocks with fissidens on them and some smaller twigs to try to achieve the effect I was looking for.

Have you done a regular photo-follow-up of the set-up? Photography helps you to have a clearer image of the development of the aquarium?
I’ve done some photo shots of it to help me see the progression of the plants. Plant Growth can drastically change your initial idea so it was good to photograph it every now and then to see what it looks like on photo. Yes, photography does help.

What kind of photographic material and technique you used for the finish picture?
I used 3 flashes and 1 hairdryer for this picture. The two main flashes were placed above the aquarium to give it its main lighting. The background was created with a slanted sky-blue mounting board and a bottom lit flash, because the mounting board is slanted, light will hit it at different intensities, giving you the gradient of lighting. The hairdryer was used to create a little ripple effect on the top of the water. As you can see, I slanted the mounting board such that the greatest intensity of light was below, closest to the horizon. This will give a more dramatic effect and draw the eye into it. Also the ripple created by the hair-dryer was placed just above where the road ends, also to try to help add to the sense of depth.

Have you added or removed any fish for the final picture?
The fishes were always there.. we just used a little herding technique to try to get them to move altogether.

¿Cómo realizas esta técnica de pastoreo?
How you do this herding techinque?
Just scare them by waving a white cloth on a stick. It is actually easier as a 2-3 person operation.. 1-2 people to scare and position lights.. 1 person to take shots from the camera.

Once you finished the scape and after the final picture, what do you think could be improved on the set-up?
Oh.. many things.. one thing was the messy forground like i said earlier. Also, the mid ground was messy. Perhaps the road could have been moved off centre more to the right of the tank and the bare foregournd opened up more as well. I also could have added more “trees” to make a more enclosed feeling perhaps? The background could also have been more dense and trimming also could have been better, perhaps a “V” shape trimming to focus the eye more to the end.

It was a pleasure for me to have the chance to interview you, would you like to add anything else?
This was fun! Scaping for me is a slow process, it relaxes me and I hope more people will take it up. Its not as easy as just buying a few plants and dumping it into an aquarium as most people think. Take time to appreciate nature and try to apply that to your own scape. Don’t be afraid to try things and if they don’t work.. you learn. Practice and practice… you’ll always get better. I’m still learning and I also look forward to getting better at this. Its been fun! :D
Thank you for this opportunity to share my experiences with the rest of the Community. It has been a great honour and pleasure
