¿Como te has inspirado para crear este paisaje?
How you got inspired to create this scape?
Como los singapurenses vivimos en una pequeña isla, no tenemos muchos lugares donde inspirarnos, así que la mayor parte de las ideas vienen de Internet. Hay muchas fotos hermosas de naturaleza que se pueden convertir en paisajismo. Para este particular paisaje, tomé la idea del Aquajournal.
For Singaporean where we stay in tiny island, our country lack of nature beauty. So most of the idea come from Internet. There are many beautiful nature photo that can be converted into aquascaping. For this particular scape, I have the idea from Aquajournal.





¿En que orden escogiste los elementos de este acuario? (troncos, piedras, plantas…)
In which order you choose the elements of this aquarium? (wood drift, stones, plants…)
En primer lugar las rocas para el hardscape. Creo que el hardscape es la parte más importante porque una vez está sumergido en agua es muy difícil de cambiar. Primero coloqué las piedras, algunas con doble función: para la decoración y para evitar que la tierra se deslice. Tomé algunos días o incluso semanas para realizar esto, sobre todo por la disponibilidad de material ya que encontrar buenas piedras y troncos es muy raro en Singapur. A parte me suelo dar un período de enfriamiento. Lo que quiero decir es que no me gusta realizar el hardscape rápidamente y plantar al mismo tiempo. Me suelo dar uno o dos días para tener una sensación del hardscape y ver si se puede mejorar o no.
Una vez que las rocas y el sustrato tenían buena distribución, seguí con los troncos. Una vez más, es difícil conseguir buen material y este proceso tomó unos días más. Empecé a plantar cuando estuve satisfecho con el hardscape. La selección de plantas no es un gran problema porque siempre se pueden retirar y plantar nuevas especies.
First would be rocks hardscape. I believe hardscape is the most important part because once water in it is very difficult to change. First I will arrange the rock, some rock have dual function, for decoration as well as to prevent soil from sliding. It took couple of days or even weeks to do this, mostly because the availability of material. Nice rocks and wood are pretty rare in Singapore. Also normally I give my self a cool down period. What I mean is I do not want to quickly setup hardscape and plant at the same time. I will give my self one or two days to have a feeling of the hardscape, see whether it can be improve or not.
Once rocks and substrate arrangement done, I continue with wood arrangement. Again it is hard to get nice wood and this process will take another few days. I start planting only when I’m satisfied with the hardscape. Plants selection isn’t very much a problem because I can just plug it off and plant new species.

¿Qué te motivó para ponerle el nombre al acuario?
Why did you choose this name? what was the purpose?
Para mí, el nombre es tan sólo una manera de identificar mi trabajo. Es más fácil decir "brisa de verano" en lugar de "mi tanque de 3 pies del 2009" cuando se quiere hablar con un amigo.
En cuanto a lo de escoger este nombre "Summer Breeze" (Brisa de Verano), "Verano" representa el sentimiento luminoso del paisaje, especialmente en el lado izquierdo.
Además, se suele visitar la playa durante el verano.
"Brisa" es para representar el movimiento ondulante del helecho de Java narrow, cuando es acariciada por el flujo de agua del filtro.
For me, name is just a way to call my work. It is easier to say “summer breeze” rather than “my 2009 3ft tank setup” when you want to discuss it with friend.
As for why I name it “Summer Breeze”, “Summer” is to represent the bright feeling of the scape, especially on the left hand side of the scape. Also you normally visit beach during summer. “Breeze” is to represent the waving movement of narrow leaf java fern when it was blown by filter flow.



¿Has realizado algún tipo de esbozo o dibujo previo al montaje?
Have you prepared any kind of draft or drawing previous to set-up?
No soy un buen dibujante, por lo que normalmente no hago ningún dibujo, pero creo que es buena idea tener un boceto inicial. De hecho, yo animaría a la gente a hacer bocetos, de lo contrario, probablemente como yo, necesitan un par de días o semanas para configurar los elementos sólidos. Con el boceto, es más fácil el poder discutir sus ideas con amigos o compañeros de afición, pedirles opinión, etc…
Uno puede fácilmente afinar su idea del diseño en el dibujo.
I’m not a good sketcher, so normally I didn’t do any drawing but I believe it is good idea to have initial sketch. In fact I would encourage people to do sketch, otherwise you probably like me need couple of days or weeks just to setup the hardscape. With sketch, it is easier for you to discuss your idea with friend or fellow hobbyist, ask them for comment, etc. You can fine easily fine tune your hardscape idea in the sketch.

¿Para hacer la distribución de los sólidos y las plantas has seguido algún tipo de proporción estudiada previamente o simplemente has improvisado sobre la marcha i/o seguido tu intuición.?
To arrange the distribution of solids and plants, are you following any kind of previously studied proportion or simply you improvised as you work on the scape or followed your intuition?
Supongo que es una mezcla entre la intuición y la experiencia. Busco la inspiración de otros paisajes pero la mayoría del tiempo estoy pensando en cómo mezclar y combinar diferentes tipos de plantas. Es difícil el mezclar y combinar las plantas, ya que es necesario esperar que crezcan antes de que pueda ver si su aspecto es agradable, extraño o simplemente feo.
I guess it’s a mix between intuition and previously done scape. I do look inspiration from other scape but most of the time is related to how you mix and match different plant. It is difficult to mix and match plants because you need to wait until the plants grow mature before you can see whether its look nice, weird or simply ugly.

Have you done any cycling on the aquarium?
Sí, me gusta ciclar mis tanques antes de poner cualquier animal y lo hago junto con las plantas. Actualmente planto densamente des del principio, en mi opinión, ayuda a prevenir la proliferación de algas. No utilizo ningún test por lo tanto realizo de manera conservadora un ciclado de 4 semanas.
Yes I do cycling my tank before putting any fauna. I cycle it together with plants, actually I always plants heavily from start. In my opinion it will help preventing algae bloom. I do not use any test kit so I conservatively cycle my tank for 4 weeks.

¿Como vas incorporando los nutrientes durante las primeras semanas del montaje? (co2, nitrato, fosfato, potasio, micros…)
How do you add nutrients in the first weeks of set-up? (co2, N, P, K, microelements…)
Sólo empiezo a añadir nutrientes a partir de las 2 semanas, ya que creo que hay una gran cantidad de nutrientes en la columna de agua debido al sustrato que uso. Sigo el índice estimado de dosificación, uso KNO3, KH2PO4, elementos traza y hierro. Con el tiempo voy afinando mi régimen de dosificación.
Después de unos cuantos años en este hobby uno crea una intuición para saber cuando una planta está sana o no.
I only start dose nutrient after 2 weeks, I beleive there are plenty of nutrient in the water column due to the substrate that I used. I’m following Estimate Index dosing regime, I use KNO3, KH2PO4, trace elements and Iron.
Along the way I fine tune my dosing regime. After few year in this hobby you will kind of have a feeling or intuition wether plant healthy or not.

¿Que tipo de agua has usado?
What kind of water have you used?
He utilizado agua del grifo. El agua de Singapur, es baja en kh y gh, el pH depende de la localización. Mi pH normalmente es de 7, es neutro. El único aditivo que añado en el agua es el anti-cloro y cloraminas durante el cambio de agua.
No creo que el kH y el gH realmente tengan tanta importancia para las plantas, creo que las plantas son capaces de adaptarse a una amplia gama de KH y GH.
El N, P y K no son un problema ya que uso el sistema de dosificación de índice estimativo que proporciona una buena dosis de nutrientes.
I just use water from water tap. Singapore tap is low in kh and gh but pH is depend on the location. My place pH happens to be 7, which is neutral. The only additive that I put into the water is anti chlorine and chloramines during water change.
I do not think kH and gH really matter that much to plant, I believe plant able to adapt to wide range of kH and gH. N, P and K don’t really matter either because I’m using EI dosing regime that by default provide abundant of nutrient.

¿Que cantidad de luz y de que manera la incorporas al acuario?
How and how much light you put on the aquarium?
Esto es difícil de contestar. Yo uso distinta iluminación para cada distinto paisaje dependiendo de las plantas que uso. Recientemente, muchos aficionados están empezando a utilizar poca luz. En mi opinión, quiero que mis plantas crezcan rápido, así que puedo tomar la foto final más rápido y comenzar un nuevo paisaje. Hay muchos concursos por ahí y la mayoría de ellos piden que presente una obra inédita.
Considero que la luz es una herramienta más al igual que las tijeras. Si quieres que crezcan más rápido y más densas, sólo tienes que añadir más luz. Incluso se puede utilizar la luz para que el crecimiento de sus plantan sean en la dirección que uno desee.
Para este paisaje, usé 150 vatios con HQI 8000K que es una luz muy brillante y dura. Se creó una fuerte sombra bajo las ramas y después de algunas semanas me di cuenta de que las plantas situadas debajo de las ramas no crecían, así que agregué 2x24W T5 para llenar la sombra.
This is difficult to answer. I use different lighting for different scape depending on the plants I use. Recently many hobbyists are starting to use low light. In my opinion, I want my plant to grow fast, that way I can take a final photo faster and start a new scape. There are many competitions out there and most of them will ask you to submit unpublished work.
Consider light as one of your tools, just like scissor. You want it to grow faster and denser, just add more light. You can even use light to grow your plant in the direction that you want.
For this particular scape, I’m using 150Watt HQI 8000K. It is very bright and harsh. It creates strong dark shadow under the tree branches. After few weeks I realize that the plants under the tree branch shadow are unable to grow, so I add additional 2x24W T5 light to fill the shadow.

¿Has tenido aparición de algas en algún momento? A qué lo atribuyes? De que manera las has combatido?
Did you get any algae in any moment? Why you think it happened? How did you eliminate it?
Las únicas algas que he tenido en este tanque han sido las algas verde punto y las algas barba negras. Las algas verde punto aparecieron sólo durante algunos meses. Fue a causa que durante ese tiempo el tanque recibió luz directa del sol a través de las ventanas cada mañana. La habitación donde se encontraba el tanque recibe la luz del sol de la mañana durante medio año por su ubicación, no intencionalmente. No hay porque preocuparse, simplemente se elimina durante el mantenimiento semanal.
Las algas barba aparecieron en dos ocasiones durante la vida de este tanque. En ambas ocasiones sucedió porque me quedé sin co2 en la botella. Simplemente corté las plantas infectadas tanto como fue posible y realicé tratamiento localizado en las rocas y troncos.
Nunca se debe rascar esta alga, ya que hará que se extienda rápidamente.
The only algae that I experience with this scape are Green Spot Algae (GSA) and Black Beard Algae (BBA). 
Green Spot Algae (GSA) happens only during certain month. It is because during that one the tank received direct sunlight from the windows every morning. My fish tank room was located in such a way that it will receive sunlight in the morning every half a year, not intentionally. Nothing to be worry about, just scrap it during weekly maintenance.
Black Beard Algae (BBA) attack happen twice during this tank lives. Both occasion happen because my CO2 tank empty. I simply trim infected plants as much as possible and spot treatment on the wood and rocks. Never ever scarp this algae because it will make it spread faster. My guess is all those black hair attached them self to any plant that they land onto and start to grow.


¿Como has ido realizando las distintas podas? (podas todo el acuario de golpe, realizas podas parciales,…)
How you do the pruning (you arrange all aquarium at a time? Just partial pruning?)
Solo podé las plantas de tallo, la E.tenellus y los musgos.
Lo podo todo al mismo tiempo, durante el fin de semana. Sin embargo de vez en cuanto hago una poda selectiva cuando veo alguna parte que no me gusta. Por ejemplo cuando una planta crece más rápido que otra.
Esto me recuerda que el ajuste puede ser difícil debido a que las diferentes especies de plantas tienen diferente tasas de crecimiento. Después de algunas podas uno se puede dar cuenta de que algunas de ellas se recuperan más rápido, así que se podan un poco más cortas para que alcancen el nivel deseado para la foto.
I do pruning only for the stem plants, e.tenellus and moss.
I prune them all at the same time during weekend. However once a while I do selectively cut/trim when I see some thing not nice protruded out. For example one of the stem plant some how grow faster than the other. This remind me that trimming can be very tricky because different stem plant species have different rate of growth. After few trim you should be able to notice that some of them recover faster, so I will trim them slightly shorter so that it is nicely at the level that I want during the photo taking.




¿En algún momento del montaje has movido parte de los sólidos porqué no te convencían?
In any moment in the initial steps you moved the solids as you were not convinced with the result?
No retiré ninguna piedra de la hardscape porque eso hubiera destruido el diseño, la tierra se habría deslizado y muchas plantas se habrían desplantado. Esta es la razón por la cual durante la configuración inicial, dedico la mayor parte del tiempo al hardscape. Hay que estar muy, muy seguro de que se trata del hardscape final que uno desea. Por supuesto, siempre se puede terminar de ajustar más tarde, como por ejemplo añadiendo pequeñas rocas.
Never remove any stone from the hardscape because it will destroy the hardscape. Imagine the soil will slide and many plants will be uprooted. This is the reason why during initial setup, hardscape take the longest to setup. You have to be very very sure that this is final hardscape that you want. Of course you can still fine-tune it later. For example adding small rock or pebble.

¿Has seguido un seguimiento fotográfico durante todo el montaje? ¿Te ayuda la fotografía a visualizar mejor el desarrollo del acuario?
Have you done a regular photo-follow-up of the set-up? Photography helps you to have a clearer image of the development of the aquarium?
No. Soy demasiado perezoso para configurar todo el equipo para tomar la foto correcta.
Nope. I’m too lazy to setup all the equipment for proper photo taking.

¿Que material fotográfico y técnicas has usado para la foto final?
What kind of photographic material and technique you used for the finish picture?
He usado flash externos, 2 para el acuario y para el fondo. No soy fotógrafo, así que no sé muy bien cómo jugar con la iluminación. Todavía estoy aprendiendo.
Uso una Canon 400D con el Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. Tomé la foto en 17mm, 20mm y 22mm y comparé para ver cual se veía mejor. Usé ISO 400 y obertura de f/11 la velocidad de obturación alrededor de 200. No soy experto por lo tanto suelo probar y ver cual es la mejor toma...
I use external flash, 2 for the tank and for the background. I’m not a photographer, so I do not really know how to play around with the lighting. I'm still learning.
I'm using Canon 400D with Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. I took the photo with 17mm, 20mm, 22mm and compare which one look better. I use ISO 400 and set the aperture to f/11, shutter speed around 200. I'm not expert so normally will try and error and see which one is the best.

¿Has retirado o añadido algún pez para la foto final?
Have you added or removed any fish for the final picture?
No agregué, pero si que retiré. Quito los peces que se pueden pegar en el cristal como los Plecos o otos antes de tomar la foto. No puse nuevos peces porque fácilmente se puede ver el distinto color entre los nuevos peces y los peces que llevan tiempo debido al estrés.
También se puede ver los diferentes tamaños entre los peces viejos y los nuevos. Los peces que se venden en LFS normalmente son jovenes.
Added no, remove yes. I remove those fish that can stick on the glass like pleco or otos before photo taking. I did not put new fish because you can easily see the colour different between new fish and old fish. Due to stress new fish color is normally dull.
You can also see the size different between old and new fish. Fish that sold in LFS normally are juvenile.




¿Has creado el acuario solo con fines de competición y será desmontado después de la última foto, o tienes intención de mantenerlo más tiempo?
This set-up was created for contest purposes and will be “dismantled” after the last picture or do you have the intention to keep it for the long run?
Normalmente los mantengo un poco más de tiempo, al menos hasta que surge una nueva idea. Durante ese tiempo se convierte en un tanque de experimentación. Este es el momento en el que puedo experimentar con distintos tipos de plantas. Cambio una planta por otra, un musgo por otro, etc…
Normally I will keep it little bit longer, at least until new idea come up. During that time it become experimental tank. This is the time where I can experiment with different type of plant. Change some plant into different plants; change this moss into that moss, etc.

¿Una vez finalizado el paisaje y después de la foto final, que aspectos crees que pueden ser mejorables?
Once you finished the scape and after the final picture, what do you think could be improved on the set-up?
En ese momento yo habría dicho que nada ya que lo habría hecho si lo hubiera sabido :). Sin embargo, dos años han pasado y he aprendido cosas nuevas que me podrían ayudar a mejorar el paisaje. Creo que añadiendo pequeñas rocas conseguiría darle un aire más natural y la vallisneria nana la dejaría crecer un poco más espesa en el fondo.
At that time I would say none, I would have done so if I knew it :). However, 2 years had pass and you learn new thing that can be use to improve the scape. I would think that the area around sand and rocks are too smooth, I would think that adding small rocks would make it look more natural. Also let the V.nana at the back grow bushier a bit.





¿En algun momento has retocado fotografias con fotoshop? Piensas que deberia ser aceptable el retoque en los concursos? Que límites pondrias?
Have you used any kind of Photoshop for this scape? Do you think image edition should be acceptable in the contests? Which limits would you fix for this, if any?
En primer lugar quiero decir que no no tengo Photoshop. No sé cómo utilizarlo y suelo pedirle a un amigo que me ayude a arreglar la distorsión de la lente.
En mi opinión, dependerá de hasta qué punto se edita la imagen. Por ejemplo retocar la corrección de lente, el brillo, el contraste es correcto. Sin embargo, algo así como la adición de plantas, la adición de peces, crear espejo, mejorar o modificar plantas / peces no se debe permitir. El problema es que la gente que hace esto es difícil de atrapar.
First of all, I do not have Photoshop. I do not know how to use Photoshop although I do ask friend to help me fix the lens distortion.
In my opinion it depend on how far do you edit your picture. For example, lens correction, brightness, contrast should be OK. However something like adding plants, adding fish, mirror, enhance or change plants/fishes colours should not be allow. Problem is all of these are difficult to catch.
