¿Como te has inspirado para crear este paisaje?
How you got inspired to create this scape?
Tenía la idea de montar un tanque centrado un poco más en Bolbitis. Me gustan este tipo de plantas de tallo, se ven fantásticas. Entonces descubrí el tanque de Luís Moniz http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/aquascaping/56945-90-45-45-a.html y uno parecido, esta vez de la galería ADA, y supe que construiría mi propia isla.

I had a plan to build a tank which focusing a bit more on Bolbitis. I kind of like the ferns they looks amazing. Then i met with the tank from Luís Moniz http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/aquascaping/56945-90-45-45-a.html and a similar one this time from the ADA gallery and i knew that i build my own island.

¿Por qué elegiste este nombre? ¿Cual era el motivo?
Why did you choose this name? what was the purpose?
Siempre tengo problemas con los nombres. En algún momento el paisaje se volvió más y más parecido a una isla, bueno, menos en el césped…
Pero realmente el montaje es claramente una isla flotando en el césped. En este punto pasó a ser mi isla, mi “isla privada”.

I always have problem with the naming. At some point the scape become more and more of an island, well except on a grass.... But really the whole scape is a well separated “island” floating on the grass. That was the point when it become my island.... “My Private Island”.



¿En que orden escogiste los elementos de este acuario? (troncos, piedras, plantas…)
In which order you choose the elements of this aquarium (wood drift, stones, plants…)
Bueno, sabía que utilizaría mi sustrato actual con alguna capa nueva fresca. Sin arena, como el tanque en el que me inspiré. También sabía que utilizaría un tronco color hierro oscuro, ya que el color y la textura de estas maderas son increíbles. El sustrato y la madera oscuros limitan el uso de piedras. Elegí seiryu principalmente por su textura y su medida... Usé mucha para sujetar la estructura de madera y dar una buena base a todo el montaje. Las plantas las decidí posteriormente.

Well i was sure i will use my existing soil setup with some fresh layers - so no sand like the original inspiration. Then i knew i will use a dark iron wood as the colour and the texture of these woods are amazing. The dark soil and the dark wood limited the use of the stones. I picked seiryu mainly because the texture and its size. Used quite amount to hold my wood structure and give a good base to the overall look. All plants decided after that.



¿De donde has obtenido los materiales para el hardscape? (de la naturaleza, de un comercio…)
Where did you get the materials for the hardscape? (Nature, Shop,...)
Bueno, tengo la suerte de tener una tienda de aquascaping en mi país. O sea, no era un problema el acceso a los materiales. A veces es más fácil comprar los materiales en una tienda, y así te ahorras el lavado y la preparación de la madera, etc, y te puedes centrar más en el montaje en sí.

Well i am lucky as we're managing an aquascaping shop in my country. So there was no question really where to pick these materials. Sometimes easier to pick these items in a shop, because you do not have to hassle with cleaning and wood preparation etc and you can focus more on the scape itself.


¿Que técnicas para distribuir y fijar los sólidos has usado?
Which techniques you used for to make the distribution and fixation of every kind of solids?
No necesité ninguna fijación. La idea era construir una estructura de madera y sujetarla con tanta piedra como fuera necesaria para mantenerla en posición y darle un buen aspecto. Basicamente las piedras hacen el trabajo.

I do not needed any fixation. The idea was that to build the wood structure and support that as much stone as needed to hold it in position and give a good overall impression. Basically the stone did the work




¿Has realizado algún tipo de esbozo o dibujo previo al montaje?
Have you prepared any kind of draft or drawing previous to set-up?
Esta es una buena pregunta. Soy director artístico y diseñador gráfico en mi vida privada, pero a lo mejor por esto es que nunca hago ningún boceto para mí mismo. Puedo ver desde el principio como se verá el paisaje en los próximos meses. Pero puedo entender que a veces un boceto ayuda a hacer un mejor trabajo al final. De todas maneras necesitas también flexibilidad en la planificación. Cuando alguna cosa no funciona como esperabas tienes que cambiar el plan y redefinirlo, hasta que estas seguro del resultado. El boceto no ayuda a esta flexibilidad.

This is a good question. I am an art director / graphic designer in private life, but maybe because of that, i never create drafts for myself. I already can see from the beginning how the scape will look like a few months later. But i can see that sometimes a draft can help to make a better work at the end. However you also need to be flexible for planning. When something not work out the way you planned you need to change the plan and refine it, til you're confident about the result. Draft not that flexible on this part.


¿Para hacer la distribución de los sólidos y las plantas has seguido algún tipo de proporción estudiada previamente o simplemente has improvisado sobre la marcha i/o seguido tu intuición?
To arrange the distribution of solids and plants, are you following any kind of previously studied proportion or simply you improvised as you work on the scape or followed your intuition?
Conocía la mayoría de las plantas que quería utilizar. Por ejemplo, no usando arena en el frontal necesitaba un tapizado. La manera más fácil y natural era usar párvula ahí, y dar un aspecto de césped. Para la parte trasera necesitaba una planta tipo cortina suficientemente elegante como para “aguantar” el paisaje. En ese punto elegí Vallisneria nana con Cyperus Helferi. Hoy usaría Isoetes Japónica para sustituir la Vallisneria ya que es muy difícil controlar esta planta. Sabía que quería algún musgo y, por supuesto, alguna planta de tallo. Y para la base del montaje usé algunas anubias para dirigir el foco del tapete hacia los sólidos y las plantas de tallo. La selección de plantas combina bastante bien entre ellas sin centrarse en ninguna en particular. También, al ser la idea hacer un montaje “verde”, decidí no poner ninguna planta de tonos rojos.

I knew most of the plants i wanted to use. For example with not using sand on the front i needed a carpet. The easiest and the more natural way was to use parvula there and make a grassy look. For the back i needed a curtain kind of plant which sleek enough to support the scape. At that time i choose Vallisneria Nana with Cypherus Heliferi. Today i would use Isoetes Japonica to replace Vallis Nana as it's pretty challenging to control this plant. I knew i wanted some moss and of course some ferns too. And for the base of the scape used some Anubias to drive your eyes from the grass to the hardscape and the ferns. The plant selection is kind of working with each other without putting too much attention to any plant. Also since the plan was to build a "green" layout i was sure to not use any reddish plant.



¿Como vas incorporando los nutrientes durante las primeras semanas del montaje?(co2, nitrato, fosfato, potasio, micros…)
How do you add nutrients in the first weeks of set-up? (co2, N, P, K, microelements…)
Siguiendo la filosofía japonesa solo adiciono K durante las primeras 2 semanas aprox. Después, el arranque y la densidad del montaje me dicen cuanto usar de fertilizante. Así es como funciona en mis tanques.

Following the japanese philosophy only dose K at the beginning in the first 2 weeks approx. After that the scape aging and density tells me how much fert to use. This pretty much working on my tanks

¿Que cantidad de luz y de que manera la incorporas al acuario?
How and how much light you put on the aquarium?
Soy un tipo de alta iluminación ;-) o sea, que odio las limitaciones en la selección de plantas. Uso 1 w/l en la mayoría de mis montajes. Por supuesto, usar esta cantidad de luz todo el resto de puntos tienen que funcionar, como la filtración, el CO2 y la fertilización. Por lo tanto, asegurad que todo esté de acuerdo con la cantidad de luz, o las algas serán inquilinos habituales en vuestros tanques. Este tanque tiene 216 watt para 240 litros, con tubos T5 funcionando 8 horas al día.

I am a high light guy ;) Means i hate the limitations on plant selection. Using 1 w/l on most of my setups. Of course to use such a strong lighting all other parts need to work. Like filtration, CO2 and ferts. So make sure you have those aligned with the lighting otherwise and algae will be a continuous guest in your tank. This tank has 216 watt for 240 liter with T5 tubes. Running 8 hours a day.





¿Que tipo de agua has usado y cada cuanto realizas los cambios?
What kind of water have you used and which criteria you use for water-changes?
Usé agua del grifo desde el principio. Esto es una agua un poco mas dura de lo que necesitaba, con GH 15 KH 13. Pero el tanque maduró con agua dura también. Cambios de agua semanales del 30-40%. Y cambios más frecuentes al principio. Actualmente uso agua de osmosis.

Used tap water from the beginning. This is a bit harder water than i needed, as GH 15 KH 13. But the tank matured with this hard water too. Weekly water changes with 30-40%. And more frequent changes at the beginning. Nowadays i do use RO water.


¿Has tenido aparición de algas en algún momento? A qué lo atribuyes? De que manera las has combatido?
Did you get any algae in any moment? Why you think it happened? How did you eliminate it?
Tuve un ataque de algas cuando uno de mis balastos se estropeó y funcioné con la mitad de la iluminación por dos meses (hasta que la unidad de recambio llegó). A algunas plantas no les gustaron la iluminación reducida y empezaron a deshacerse. Como por ejemplo el tapete de párvula o las vallisneria nana. Tuve un ataque de GDA en las siguientes semanas, y poco a poco se fue arreglando aunque tuve que usar el imán y la cuchilla para eliminarlas del cristal. Aparte de esto he tenido alguna alga marrón en las piedras, pero parece que esto es algo natural y no lo considero significativo. Esto probablemente por las partículas del sustrato que salen a flote. Tengo algunos peces grandes de mi último montaje que probablemente han ayudado a ello.

Had a current algae attack as one of my ballast went off and i only used half of my lights for 2 months (til the replacement unit arrived). Some plants did not liked the reduced lighting power and started to melt. Like parvula carpet, vallis nana. So i got a GDA algae attack in the past weeks. As things are back on track the algae will gone but i do used magnet and razor to eliminate it from the glass. Other than that i have some small brown algae on the rocks, but that looks kind of natural and not that significant. This probably happens because of the floating soil pieces on the ground. I have some bigger fishes too from my earlier tank they do the tricks ;)



¿En algún momento del montaje has movido parte de los sólidos porqué no te convencían?
In any moment in the initial steps you moved the solids as you were not convinced with the result?
Los sólidos funcionaron muy bien y como las plantas los engulleron, la madera y las rocas formaron como el “esqueleto” del montaje. Uno de los troncos de la parte frontal izquierda se veía demasiado derecho, pero lo dejé en el mismo sitio. Es lo único que pensé que acabaría cambiando pero nunca lo hice.

The hardscape worked out well and as the plants overgrown on it, the wood and rocks were more of a skeleton to the overall impression. One of my wood on the front left looked too straight, but i kept it in place. That's the only thing which i though will change along the way, but that never happened.


¿Has seguido un seguimiento fotográfico durante todo el montaje? ¿Te ayuda la fotografía a visualizar mejor el desarrollo del acuario?
Have you done a regular photo-follow-up of the set-up? Photography helps you to have a clearer image of the development of the aquarium?
La fotografía realmente ayuda a conseguir el mejor aspecto del acuario. Por supuesto he hecho muchas fotos desde el principio. Algunas veces ayuda a ver donde necesito mas trabajo con las plantas. Como menos tallos en la parte central, o reducir el efecto de cortina en la parte posterior, etc. Fotografías frecuentes ayudan a archivar todos los momentos. A veces puedes ver zonas que se ven bien en algunas fases iniciales que sería difícil de retener simplemente en la memoria.

Photography really helps to reach the best look of the aquarium. Of course i do used many photos from the beginning. Sometimes helped to me to see where i need more work with the plants. Like less ferns on the centre part, or reducing the curtain effect on the background etc. Frequent photos helps to archive all the moments. Sometimes you find parts looking better in an earlier phase, which would be harder to see only from your memories.


¿Que material fotográfico y técnicas has usado para la foto final?
What kind of photographic material and technique you used for the finish picture?
Tengo muchas cosas que aprender sobre la fotografía y no tengo un buen equipo de iluminación o flash. Me ayudaría a hacer mejores fotos. Sin este equipo he tenido que buscar una solución. Tenía una pantalla de mi sistema de iluminación del acuario. Es un 2x40T8. La usé en la parte baja-trasera, para iluminar las zonas más oscuras. También puse una pantalla de 4x54watt en la parte superior del tanque. Aparte de esto, construí un marco enorme para eliminar todas las luces y reflejos de la pared.
La sesión de fotografía empiezó a las 9-10 PM, justo después de irse la luz para minimizar los reflejos en los cristales. También apago el CO2 dos horas antes de tirar las fotografías para eliminar las burbujas más gruesas del tanque. Aparte de esto solamente un trípode y la cámara conectada al portátil. Uso disparador remoto para las fotos finales.

I do have many things to learn about photography and i do not have a good studio lighting or a flash. This would help to create much better photos. Without these i needed to find a solution. Had a hood lamp from my original aquarium lighting. This was like 2*40T8 light. Used it behind the aquarium on the bottom part to enlighten the dark areas. Kept the regular 4*54watt aquarium lighting on the top of the tank. Other than that i built a huge framing to eliminate all the lights and reflection from the wall. Shooting session happened at 9-10pm just before the lights goes off to minimize glass reflections. I also shut off CO2 2 hours before the photo shooting to eliminate the heavy bubbles from the tank. Other than that just a tripod and the camera was connected to my laptop. Used remote shooting for the final photos.






¿Has retirado o añadido algún pez para la foto final?
Have you added or removed any fish for the final picture?
No ha sido necesario ya que los grandes, al final del día, se esconden detrás o bajo los sólidos. Por lo tanto solamente tengo los Rasboras nadando juntos.

Not needed as the large ones hided the end of the day behind and under the hardscape. So i only had to with Rasboras to swim together.

¿Has creado el acuario solo con fines de competición y será desmontado después de la última foto, o tienes intención de mantenerlo más tiempo?
This set-up was created for contest purposes and will be “dismantled” after the last picture or do you have the intention to keep it for the long run?
Lo creé para el IAPLC, y será remontado de nuevo en breve. He visto varios tanques increíbles este año también y necesito intentar otros montajes que tengo en mente. Este tanque tiene un año y aún está en buenas condiciones y lo podría mantener por más tiempo, pero tengo demasiadas ideas para probar.

Created this for the IAPLC, and will be rescaped around this time. I've seen many amazing tank this year too and i need to try other setups which i have in my mind. This tank is a year old now and it still in good condition i could keep it for longer time too, but there are so many other ideas to try.

¿Una vez finalizado el paisaje y después de la foto final, que aspectos crees que pueden ser mejorables?
Once you finished the scape and after the final picture, what do you think could be improved on the set-up?
Bueno, hay varias cosas que podría mejorar. El musgo se ve horrible comparado con mis otros montajes con musgo del pasado. Tengo dos comedores de algas de Siam en este tanque y se comen los musgos. Aparte de esto cambiaría los troncos del frontal izquierdo (el mas recto). Un poco menos de Vallisneria en la parte trasera y más detalles en la parte media podría ser bueno. Los laterales podrían tener también mejores detalles.

Well there are many parts which could improve. The moss on the wood looks terrible compare to my other moss setups in the past. I have 2 Siamese Algae Eater fish in this tank and they eat unlimited number of mosses. Other than that i would change the wood on the front left (the straight one). A bit less Vallisneria on the back and more details on the mid part could be good. And the 2 sides could have nicer details too.



¿En algún momento has retocado fotografías con fotoshop? Piensas que debería ser aceptable el retoque en los concursos? Que límites pondrías?
Have you used any kind of Photoshop for this scape? Do you think image edition should be acceptable in the contests? Which limits would you fix for this, if any?
Uso Photoshop en mi trabajo diario. Photoshop es para pura manipulación de imagen y pienso que no es aceptable. También uso otras herramientas para fotografía. La mayor parte de las correcciones de color, definición, saturación, pueden ser realizados con los software que facilitan Canon y Nikon. Cuando empiezas con el Photoshop en un paso puedes arreglar eso o lo otro, invertir la imagen, quitar puntos, errores, etc. Lo cual está bien cuando preparas fotografías para una revista, o para pasar el rato, pero no para un concurso. Solo aceptaría retoques en definición y corrección de color, redimensión y recorte. Cualquier otra cosa es manipulación, lo cual no lo veo justo para los otros participantes.

I do use Photoshop in my daily work. Photoshop is for pure image manipulation so i think this is not acceptable. I also use other tools for photos. Most of the fine colour correction work, sharpening, saturation can be done with Canon and Nikon software or Lightroom etc. When you're there in Photoshop there's just one step to fix this and that, mirror image, remove dots, errors etc. Which is ok when you do a magazine shots, or just for fun, but not for a contest. I would only accept sharpening and colour correction, resize and cutting. Anything else is manipulation which is not fair to the others.

Los acuarios plantados, el acuascaping, es un hobby muy bonito, donde puedes usar tu creatividad y aprender más sobre la naturaleza con todas tus experiencias.
Hay muchos retos, y puede que no montes un acuario perfecto a la primera, tendrás algas, o otros problemas técnicos, pero con el tiempo aprenderás a hacerlo mejor, cómo equilibrarlo. Nosotros hemos pasado por ello también. Los acuarios naturales se han popularizado porque es como un arte, y nos inspiramos los unos en los otros. Muchas sensibilidades, muchas ideas creativas. Planted aquarium, aquascaping is a beautiful hobby, where you can use your creativity and learn more about nature with all those experiences.
There are many challenges, and you may not build a perfect aquarium for the first time, you will have algae issues, or other technical ones, but along the time you learn how to make it better, how to balance it. We’ve been there too.
Nature Aquariums become so popular because it’s kind of an art, and we all get inspired from each other. So many different sense, so many creativity and ideas. I love that part.
