English:
I had long wanted to do an interview with the aquarium to the section in focus and when I contacted Pavel Bautino to ask if he wanted to participate in my blog, I took the opportunity to expose him an idea that had long had in mind : An interview where they could participate all the fans who have things to ask. Pavel accepted without hesitation and that is how he started this experiment.English:
Today I publish this post on the blog for all those who want to ask about the creation, technical, maintenance, inspiration, etc.., of this aquarium, so you can do, leaving your questions in a comment until the deadline March 13.
The only conditions for which your questions are part of the interview are:
-Dealing with this particular aquarium
-That does not refer to any trademarks (as you can see in my interviews is a subject which is excluded)
-Do not disrespect (in this case will neither be published on the blog)
Once I have collected all the questions, I will elaborate on the interview, adding that I believe have not been made and that might be interesting and I know I will get to Pavel.
Can formulate the questions in English or Spanish and I'll translate for the final interview.

How you got inspired to create this scape?
Well I got my inspiration from a scenery pictures that I search from the internet. Normally before I start my scape, I will look at scenery photographs or pictures to find something interesting to follow.
Why did you choose this name? what was the purpose?
Well quick frankly, I’m bad with coming out names, this one my friends from Little Green Corner came out for me. It’s actually meant good memories of how jungle looks like when we venture into it when we are still a child.
In which order you choose the elements of this aquarium.
For me, I will try to choose the main elements first which is the wood and stones. Only once the hardscape has been determine then only I will choose the plants.
Where did you get the materials for the hardscape?
Well I normally buy the materials from our local fish shops.
Which techniques you used for to make the distribution and fixation of every kind of solids?
No special techniques, I just fix the push in the wood or stone into the soil. Sometimes I just use some small stones as a support to make the wood or stone stand straight.
Have you prepared any kind of draft or drawing previous to set-up?
Yes I do have some sketches previous to set up, and even after set up I will still sketches to try to see other possibilities.
¿Para hacer la distribución de los sólidos y las plantas has seguido algún tipo de proporción estudiada previamente o simplemente has improvisado sobre la marcha i/o seguido tu intuición.?
To arrange the distribution of solids and plants, are you following any kind of previously studied proportion or simply you improvised as you work on the scape or followed your intuition?
Yes I do follow certain proportions, like the golden ratio so I do some calculations and put masking tape on the front glass, then I will put the divide the materials accordingly
How do you add nutrients in the first weeks of set-up?
Well in the 2 weeks I don’t put any nutrients into the water. Only after that, I start to dose nutrients (KNO3) and when they start to grow or new leaves then dose some Iron.
.
With wich parameters of water do you like to work?
Actually I don’t really measure the parameters of the water anymore and I’m not very good at this scientific names. So I just dosed fertz according to the guide.
How and how much light you put on the aquarium? What colour light do you use?
I use 55watts x 4 white PL lights for this tank.
Why you choose this fauna for this set-up?
Well I wanted some fish that can stand out from the tank, but not too much and also that can shoals together.
¿Has tenido aparición de algas en algún momento? A qué lo atribuyes? De que manera las has combatido?
Did you get any algae in any moment? Why you think it happened? How did you eliminate it?
Well of course, algae are part of the aquascaping. I get a lot of green spot on the glass and rocks on the white sands. I also get BGA from time to time on the white sands. So what I do is stuck or scrap off those algae and do more water change. I also make sure plants are growing well so that they can compete with the algae for nutrients
Do you have any preference for the first “pruning”?
Nope I don’t have any preference on the first pruning, but normally I will let it grow as much as possible, but if some plants get to messy for grow faster than the others I will do pruning on that particular plant first.
For this particular scape, I had some new plants which is the limnophilia sp.vietnam which I only have about 10stems, so once they grow tall I will trim and plant back. I repeated the process until they are bushy.
¿Como has ido realizando las distintas podas?
How you do the pruning?
Podas parciales de vez en cuando
Partial pruning from time to time.
In any moment in the initial steps you moved the solids as you were not convinced with the result?
Well I do move a lot of the hardscapes, I have change the woods and the position couple of times and trying to get the most of it. For me usually the initial setup and the final scapes looks very different. Its kind of a bad habit of mine, but its also because I’m not still very good at determine the hardscapes and of course sometimes we just unable to get all the hardscapes all at once.
Have you done a regular photo-follow-up of the set-up? Photography helps you to have a clearer image of the development of the aquarium?
Yes I do take regular pictures of the tank as it will tell me where to improve, cause sometimes we actually seeing the tank in different height and perspective so you may like it, but a photo is taken directly at the center view of the tank, so it can tell you what others will see and not, so then I can adjust accordingly.
What kind of photographic material and technique you used for the finish picture?
For this picture, I used only 1 external flash on top of the tank and some normal lights on the back of the tank. I did not plan for the light distribution.
Have you added or removed any fish for the final picture?
Yeah I actually did, I removed as many Otocinclus as possible as they like to stick on the front glass.
Once you finished the scape and after the final picture, what do you think could be improved on the set-up?
A lot, I will always not satisfied and find ways to improve, maybe I can use a better wood or rocks. But we only have certain limit of time, so I just do the best I can at that time.
Have you used any kind of Photoshop for this scape? Do you think image edition should be acceptable in the contests? Which limits would you fix for this, if any?
Well I only adjust the exposure of the picture. Well I think adjusting exposure should be alright, but not doing touch up like adding fish, plants, cleaning spots on the picture.

How you got inspired to create this scape?
I was mountaineering with some friends in Snowdonia, Wales. The piles of rocks looked great at the bottom of the mountains. We call these piles, “scree”. Iwagumi is very popular but I wanted to try something a bit different.
Which techniques you used for to make the distribution and fixation of every kind of solids?
I simply sloped the sand and positioned the rocks. Some lay on top of one another to gain the height and effect of the ‘scree’.
Have you prepared any kind of draft or drawing previous to set-up?
No. It is a case of trial and error. As I create more aquascapes this process becomes more efficient. I rarely draw as I am rubbish at it! I think this is one reason I love aquascaping and photography, so I can be creative without needing the skill to draw.
I do not rigidly follow any rules when ‘scaping. Perhaps focal points are positioned using the Golden Ratio or Rule of Thirds, but this process is not forced. If something looks right to me, it looks right! I think guidelines and rules are important for beginners until they have the confidence to be free with their own creative flow. For some lucky aquascapers this comes naturally right away. For me it took several years of practice!
How you arranged the first planting?
I planted this with the water 1/3 full. This is how I usually plant an aquascape, especially with plants sensitive to drying out.
How do you add nutrients in the first weeks of set-up?
I usually add a comprehensive all-in-one liquid fertiliser containing NPK and trace @ 5ml per 100 litre per day. I will change at least 50% of the water 3x per week in the first 2 weeks.
Do you change the amount and the method of fertilizing when the aquarium is already mature?
Si.
Yes. As the plants grow I will usually add more, up to around 10ml per 100 litres per day, using the same product.
With wich parameters of water do you like to work?
I have not tested my water for any parameters except temperature and CO2 in 6 years.
How and how much light you put on the aquarium? What colour light do you use?
Normalmente uso 2 T5HO a lo largo del acuario. 6500k es un buen color para las plantas. Actualmente he estado usando los led.
Usually I will use 2 x HO T5 across the length of the aquarium. 6500K is a nice natural spectrum for plants. Recently I have been using LED.
What kind of water have you used and which criteria you use for water-changes?
Uso agua del grifo. Es dura y alta en No3 y Po4. Cambio el 50% cada semana.
I use tap water. It is hard and high in NO3 and PO4. I always change at least 50% per week.
¿Has tenido aparición de algas en algún momento? A qué lo atribuyes? De que manera las has combatido?
Did you get any algae in any moment? Why you think it happened? How did you eliminate it?
No. If I do I remove the affected leaf then address any issues i.e. CO2, light, ferts, circulation etc.
Do you have any preference for the first “pruning”?
Not really. As soon as a plant looks like it needs pruning, I prune it. Simple!
¿Como has ido realizando las distintas podas?
How you do the pruning?
It depends on the aquascape and plants. In this aquascape I will prune all at the same time. With plants with different growth rates I will prune to anticipate all plants reaching the desired growth at the same time.
¿Has limpiado las piedras?¿Como?
Have you cleaned the stones? How?
Si.
Yes. With a steel-wire brush. I empty ½ of the water, scrub the rocks in the tank, then change 80% of the tank water.
Have you done a regular photo-follow-up of the set-up?
Si.
Yes. I ran a journal on the UKAPS forum on this aquascape.
What kind of photographic material and technique you used for the finish picture?
To photograph this final tank shot I used 4 x 54w HO T5. The white wall is illuminated by the lights also. I shot with a 23mm focal length to increase the sense of depth.
What techniques you use to group the fish for the photo?
I will wave a broom handle to the left and right of the tank. Then use burst shoot mode to capture lots of exposures, then choose the best.
This set-up was created for contest purposes and will be “dismantled” after the last picture or do you have the intention to keep it for the long run?
This aquascape has been running for 7 months, but I changed the plants and lighting (to LED) after six months.
Once you finished the scape and after the final picture, what do you think could be improved on the set-up?
More height in the rock work.
Have you used any kind of Photoshop for this scape? Do you think image edition should be acceptable in the contests? Which limits would you fix for this, if any?
I have sharpened the image a little, and tweaked the colour balance. I try to get as much right in the camera as possible. I think Photoshop should be allowed but objects should not be removed or added.

How you got inspired to create this scape? Why did you choose this name?
When I was young, I spent a lot of time outdoors, mostly because my grandmother was from Malaysia and her sister had a durian farm. I remember spending days running around in the plantation and playing in dirty water catching fishes. Now, I’m a conservationist and work outdoors a lot..so my whole life, I’m more or less outdoors and in the forest/mountains. The forest calms me and inspires me and deserves a lot of respect. I made this scape to remind me of where I like to be…Home, and that is why I called it going home. You can take it literally as I’m going home from the forest.. or you can take it that when I go to the forest, I am home. For me, it was the latter.
I wanted to convey how wonderful the forest is and how majestic the trees were. The real thing never fails to take my heart away. This scape like i said previously.. reminds me of where i like to be and why i work to save it.¿En que orden escogiste los elementos de este acuario? (troncos, piedras, plantas…)
In which order you choose the elements of this aquarium? (wood drift, stones, plants…)
I started out looking for wood that would look like tree trunks. Surprisingly, such nice straight wood is hard to come by here in Singapore. When I started thinking of this scape it was more than 2 years back, and back then, straight wood was not popular here..so it took a long time to find the ones I liked. After the wood selection was done, I chose the plants. I was inspired by a type of plant I saw long ago when I still was in Japan (I was there for 2 years) so I picked the one closest to it I could find in Singapore. Sadly, it didn’t grow like the ones I saw there, even though the shapes were similar. I still don’t know what they used in that tank I saw so long ago in Japan.¿Que técnicas para distribuir y fijar los sólidos has usado?
Which techniques you used for to make the distribution and fixation of every kind of solids?
Perspectiva.
Perspective. When you look at photographs, it is a 2D image that is a representation of a 3D image. When you scape fish tanks.. you are essentially doing the opposite, changing a 3D image into a 2D. This is because when you submit your tank for competitions, its only in a photograph form. So it is important that we understand how perspective works in the photograph that you are going to take and submit and how to scape a tank to reflect that perception of depth in a 2D image. I used varying wood sizes and a consideration of smaller plants at different regions to try to replicate that. Also I tried to make my path meandering to give a sense of wonderment..but however, on second thought, I am still not satisfied with how it turned out. I think there are several elements that could have been improved but that’s why we scape… to learn from what we do. The more we scape.. the better we understand how to convey the image we have in our heads.
I used some pebbles to give the wood a more sturdy base as they needed to stand vertically, then with the soil around them, they were more steady in the water. The pebbles also helped in shallow areas where there was not so much soil to support the wood.¿Has realizado algún tipo de esbozo o dibujo previo al montaje?
Have you prepared any kind of draft or drawing previous to set-up?
No, I didn’t. I don’t like to be too fixed in how I scape something. I just scape and look at the results…if I don’t like it, I’ll change things. If I like it.. I’ll still change things to find something better. .. if I can’t find anything better, I go back to the one I liked most. This can take up to days or weeks.
I think I am more of an intuition scaper… of course, like I said before, I will also consider points that I have learnt from previous scapes and things I notice in nature into consideration. For example, when you look at a photograph, trees/plants in the back look very small. So I ask myself, how do I create this effect of perspective? Are there plants with similar leaf shapes but of different sizes that I can use to do this? How/where is the horizon in a picture? How do I replicate such a horizon in my fish tank? I like to play around with that theory in my scapes. I also usually, take a lot of time to play with what I have and consider different orientations of the same object and how it would work in the scape before I get down to the actual scaping.
How you arranged the first planting?
I usually plant with the aquarium filled to about half. It helps maintain the stems of the longer plants out from covering the unplanted areas.
(co2, nitrato, fosfato, potasio, micros…)
How do you add nutrients in the first weeks of set-up? (co2, N, P, K, microelements…)
I start out with about ¾ Nutirents, then after the first week. I will go with the full dosage from then on.
(kh,gh, no3-k-po4)
With wich parameters of water do you like to work? (kh, gh, no3-k-po4,...)
For a tank like this with metal halides, I like to keep my No3 levels high…somewhere around 30-35ppm. My K isa round 20ppm and Po4 is around 1.5ppm. Co2 i put in ALOT!
How and how much light you put on the aquarium? What colour light do you use?
If you can believe it.. this tank runs on 48watts of light most of the time except for 4.5hrs everyday it also uses a 150watt MH. I’ve set my light cycle at 10hrs. This 10hrs is broken into 2.5 hrs of 48watt T5 Lights, 4.5Hrs of 150watt MH + 48watt T5 and lastly, 3hrs of cool down with 48 watts T5 lights again.
What kind of water have you used and which criteria you use for water-changes?
In Singapore, we are lucky that we can use water straight out from the tap so that is what I do. However, I also don’t like to change everything too drastically so most of the time during water changes, I will only change 50% of the water and top up the rest with tap water. I also usually dose my fertilizers straight after a water change.
¿Has tenido aparición de algas en algún momento? A qué lo atribuyes? De que manera las has combatido?
Did you get any algae in any moment? Why you think it happened? How did you eliminate it?
Of course I have algae. I have yet to see a tank without algae! Haha..:DBut the algae is only very little and not a problem at all. If I keep to my weekly water changes, I only have to wipe the inside glass with a cloth during my water change and thats it!
How you do the pruning (you arrange all aquarium at a time? Just partial pruning?)
I prune according to the way i understand how a plant grows. If i know a plant grows fast, i will prune it later. If i have a slow plant, then i would have to prune it sooner because it would take time to grow to how i like it. So you can say i do partial pruning.
In any moment in the initial steps you moved the solids as you were not convinced with the result?
I change 2 of the wood positions and size because i felt that it would enhance the perspective better and I did add rocks with fissidens on them and some smaller twigs to try to achieve the effect I was looking for.
Have you done a regular photo-follow-up of the set-up? Photography helps you to have a clearer image of the development of the aquarium?
I’ve done some photo shots of it to help me see the progression of the plants. Plant Growth can drastically change your initial idea so it was good to photograph it every now and then to see what it looks like on photo. Yes, photography does help.¿Que material fotográfico y técnicas has usado para la foto final?
What kind of photographic material and technique you used for the finish picture?
I used 3 flashes and 1 hairdryer for this picture. The two main flashes were placed above the aquarium to give it its main lighting. The background was created with a slanted sky-blue mounting board and a bottom lit flash, because the mounting board is slanted, light will hit it at different intensities, giving you the gradient of lighting. The hairdryer was used to create a little ripple effect on the top of the water. As you can see, I slanted the mounting board such that the greatest intensity of light was below, closest to the horizon. This will give a more dramatic effect and draw the eye into it. Also the ripple created by the hair-dryer was placed just above where the road ends, also to try to help add to the sense of depth.
Have you added or removed any fish for the final picture?
The fishes were always there.. we just used a little herding technique to try to get them to move altogether.
¿Cómo realizas esta técnica de pastoreo?
How you do this herding techinque?
Just scare them by waving a white cloth on a stick. It is actually easier as a 2-3 person operation.. 1-2 people to scare and position lights.. 1 person to take shots from the camera.¿Una vez finalizado el paisaje y después de la foto final, que aspectos crees que pueden ser mejorables?
Once you finished the scape and after the final picture, what do you think could be improved on the set-up?
Oh.. many things.. one thing was the messy forground like i said earlier. Also, the mid ground was messy. Perhaps the road could have been moved off centre more to the right of the tank and the bare foregournd opened up more as well. I also could have added more “trees” to make a more enclosed feeling perhaps? The background could also have been more dense and trimming also could have been better, perhaps a “V” shape trimming to focus the eye more to the end.
It was a pleasure for me to have the chance to interview you, would you like to add anything else?
This was fun! Scaping for me is a slow process, it relaxes me and I hope more people will take it up. Its not as easy as just buying a few plants and dumping it into an aquarium as most people think. Take time to appreciate nature and try to apply that to your own scape. Don’t be afraid to try things and if they don’t work.. you learn. Practice and practice… you’ll always get better. I’m still learning and I also look forward to getting better at this. Its been fun! :D
Thank you for this opportunity to share my experiences with the rest of the Community. It has been a great honour and pleasure

Quel était le but ?

How you got inspired to create this scape?
I always want to add new elements or create a trend in the aquascape. A picture of 2001 ADA Catalogue inspired me for my creation. Then I think of adding a strong graphic treatment in it, so I place the driftwood toward the ground and one by one. Then Ashy Range was born
In which order you choose the elements of this aquarium?
First, I am thinking of driftwood shape and arrangement and then the stones, the aquatic plants is the last concern.
Which techniques you used for to make the distribution and fixation of every kind of solids?
No any special techniques, just try to place the woods fixed together.
Have you prepared any kind of draft or drawing previous to set-up?
Yes, I always like to draw a sketches before I setup an aquascape
Why did you choose this name? what was the purpose?
I named each portfolio from Chinese first, then translate the name to English. Actually, I will consult with some English speaking people so that the foreign people can understand the original meaning of the title.
I just want to tell the feeling of the silence before a storm is coming. It makes me feel desolate. I recall a famous Japanese novel "蒼狼"(Aoki Okami: chi hate umi tsukiru made) by Morimura Seiichi which is a story about "Genghis Khan" My work is coherent to the feeling of the huge and desolate desert. The group of stones just like the extensive moutain ridge. And this pave the way to the birth of my creation - "Ashy Range".
This is good question, I am a advertising designer before so I do each scape will base on my graphic treatment knowledge and this scape can express the nature in the graphic point of view.
For example: Golden ratio, the object's size ratio and also the object arrange from mass to diffuse etc.
How you arranged the first planting?
The way is same as Mr Amano teached before. I don’t planting without water or just soil wet
How do you add nutrients in the first weeks of set-up?
I usually don’t add nutrients but CO2 to the new set-up aquascape. After a month, I will add the combine nutrients and K to the aquarium.
How and how much light you put on the aquarium?
I use 38W T 8 x 7 , 9 hours daily
When I just set-up a tank until second month, I will apply half to 2/3 of the above timing.
What kind of water have you used and which criteria you use for water-changes?
Just use the tap water but will add chlorine remover and filtration bacteria after water change. I often change 1/3 of the tank total volume weekly.
¿Has tenido aparición de algas en algún momento? A qué lo atribuyes? De que manera las has combatido?
Did you get any algae in any moment? Why you think it happened? How did you eliminate it?
I am quite sure that every aquascaper will get algae problem and so do I. I think the algae happened is due to the ecosystem of the tank is not balance, such as the high level of nitrate, phosphate and also getting too much light etc. I tend to know which factor promote the kind of algae grow and solve the problem by reducing nitrate, phosphate and light.
¿Como has ido realizando las distintas podas?
How you do the pruning?
I pruning partially or just I want to.
In any moment in the initial steps you moved the solids as you were not convinced with the result?
This is rare in my experience because I will draft a layout before do the aquascape as I mention before. The scale adjustment and solids placement will edit in this stage.
Have you done a regular photo-follow-up of the set-up? Photography helps you to have a clearer image of the development of the aquarium?
The photo-follow-up is not a consideration in this aquascape. In recent year, I will take some photos of the aquascape and make some adjustment before the serious photo taking.
What kind of photographic material and technique you used for the finish picture?
This is not my business when you talking about this matter, the photo is taking by my friend Gary.(another CAU member) I only can tell is : he use Nikon DSLR camera, using external flash lighting and also use wide angle lens when shooting.
Have you added or removed any fish for the final picture?
No, I haven’t removed any fish for the final pic.
This set-up was created for contest purposes and will be “dismantled” after the last picture or do you have the intention to keep it for the long run?
This tank is created base on the natural environment and easy maintenance as first piority. So I keep this tank a year after I set-up.
Once you finished the scape and after the final picture, what do you think could be improved on the set-up?
Sorry, I didn’t thing about this point. I satistfied with my creation and stop to think the development of this aquascape and put it into portfolio case.
Have you used any kind of Photoshop for this scape? Do you think image edition should be acceptable in the contests? Which limits would you fix for this, if any?
No, I haven’t used any kind of Photoshop effect for this aquascape. I think the tuning the brightness and contrast should acceptable in the contest.
